An Analysis of Joshua 18:22-28: Land of Inheritance

The Inheritance of Benjamin

This passage comes right after the description of Benjamin’s tribal boundaries in Joshua 18:11-20, as the Israelites divide the Promised Land among the twelve tribes.

Joshua 18:22-28 lists the cities given to Benjamin, starting from the wilderness near Jericho and moving up toward Jerusalem, showing how each tribe received a specific portion as their inheritance from God.

The list includes well-known places like Bethel and Jerusalem (called Jebus here), reminding us that God was fulfilling His promise to give the land to His people, step by step, even if it was through a simple list of towns.

Though these verses don’t carry deep theological teachings or redemptive moments like other parts of Scripture, they still matter because they show God’s careful faithfulness in keeping His word - down to the boundaries of each tribe’s land.

This detailed assignment shows how God organized His people by tribes and territories, a pattern evident in Joshua’s land distribution, as He promised.

A List With Purpose

Even though this passage lists towns, it powerfully reminds us that God’s promises are specific and carefully kept.

The mention of Jebus, which is Jerusalem, stands out because this city was not yet fully conquered by the Israelites, showing that God’s promises often unfold over time, even when they’re already declared.

Later, in Jeremiah 4:23, the prophet looks back at places like these and sees them in ruins, reminding us that while God gives land and blessing, His people must remain faithful to keep it.

God's Faithful Promises Fulfilled

This list of cities may seem ordinary, but it’s proof that God was doing exactly what He said He would do.

Joshua 21:43-45 says clearly: 'So the Lord gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there,' showing that every town listed was part of His faithful promise kept.

Even though Benjamin’s portion was small, it included key places like Jerusalem, which reminds us that God often works through what seems small or incomplete to accomplish His bigger plan.

The fact that some cities, like Jebus, were still held by enemies shows that God’s promises often unfold in stages - we live by faith as we wait for full fulfillment, trusting that He finishes what He starts.

Jerusalem: A City With a Future

Though this list of towns may seem like a simple land record, it quietly includes Jebus - known as Jerusalem - a place that would become the heart of God’s redemptive plan.

At the time of Joshua, Jerusalem was still held by enemies, yet God had already chosen it for something greater. Years later, King David would capture it and make it his capital, as recorded in 2 Samuel 5:6-9: 'Then David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (that is, Jebus)... and David captured the fortress of Zion.' Later, Solomon would build the temple there, fulfilling God’s promise to establish His name in a specific place. This means that even in this simple list, Jerusalem’s destiny is quietly unfolding.

In time, Jerusalem would not only be the center of Israel’s worship but also the very place where Jesus, David’s greater son, would die and rise again - making it the epicenter of the gospel. What began as a partial possession in Joshua becomes, through Christ, a promise fully realized.
