Ecclesiastes 11:6 fits into a section where the writer is encouraging steady, faithful effort in life, much like a farmer sowing seeds at different times of day without knowing which will take root.

The verse uses farming as a picture of everyday work - 'In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand' means keep working from start to finish, without holding back, because you never know which effort will turn out well.

It’s not about working to earn God’s favor, but trusting that He controls the results; our job is to stay faithful in effort, whether early or late, since 'you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good.'

Keep Sowing, Because You Can’t Predict the Harvest

The verse uses the rhythm of a farmer’s day - sowing in the morning and still working in the evening - to show that faithful effort should continue without pause, because results are never in our control.

The two lines of the verse build poetically: the second half does not repeat the first but moves the idea forward, showing that work should continue after a task is finished - keep going, even late into the day. This mirrors Ecclesiastes 9:10, which says, 'Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for there is no work, no device, no knowledge, no wisdom in Sheol, to which you are going.' Life is short and uncertain, so act while you can. You won’t know which effort will succeed - whether the morning’s or the evening’s - so give yourself fully to both.

The simple truth is this: keep doing good work, again and again, because God sees what we can’t - and He brings growth in His time.

Keep Working Through Every Season, Because God Is in Charge

The practical message is clear: faithful effort should be sustained throughout life’s seasons, without idleness, because God controls outcomes.

This is the same wisdom we see in Proverbs 3:27-28, which says, 'Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when you have the power to do it. Do not say to your neighbor, ‘Go, and come back, tomorrow I will give it’ - when you have it with you now.'

And as Proverbs 6:6-8 urges us to learn from the ant, who works without being told and prepares in advance, Ecclesiastes 11:6 reminds us that our calling is to keep sowing, not to worry over which seed grows. In this, we see God’s character - He is the one who brings increase, not our timing or effort.

Jesus, who walked as the living Wisdom of God, lived this truth perfectly. He sowed grace and truth every morning and evening of His life, trusting the Father to bring the harvest - even to the cross - showing us that faithful work, offered to God, never fails.

Keep Sowing Through Doubt, Because God’s Timing Is Unseen

This verse is not only about farming or work - it calls us to keep doing good even when results aren’t visible, trusting that God’s timing differs from ours.

For example, you might encourage a friend in the morning and later share a kind word with a coworker, not knowing which moment will make a lasting difference. You might keep serving in your community even when no one notices, as Galatians 6:9 says: 'And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.'

Living this out means offering your time, kindness, and effort freely - whether it’s helping without waiting for thanks, giving without tracking returns, or forgiving without conditions - because you trust that nothing done in faith is wasted.
