To truly appreciate Paul’s words in Colossians 1:16-17, it helps to understand the situation in the small town of Colossae, where believers were being influenced by a confusing mix of religious ideas that downplayed Jesus’ uniqueness.

Some teachers in Colossae were promoting a blend of Jewish legalism, Greek philosophy, and local superstitions, suggesting that special knowledge, angel worship, or strict rules were needed for spiritual success. This made Jesus appear as one part of a larger spiritual system instead of the center of everything. Paul writes to correct this, stressing that Christ is supreme over every power and created thing. He cites Colossians 1:16, which says all things were created by Him and for Him, including any so‑called 'thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.'

By saying Jesus existed before all things and holds all things together, Paul is making a theological point. He assures believers that nothing is outside Christ’s control, a truth that echoes John 1:3, which says 'All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.'

The Greek word 'sunistēmi' means to 'hold together' or 'cohere,' suggesting that the universe doesn’t stay in order by natural laws alone, but by Christ’s ongoing power. This is about more than stars and atoms - it includes relationships, time, and spiritual realities. He isn’t a distant Creator. He is actively sustaining everything moment by moment, which means no part of life is outside His care or control.

This truth dismantles any idea that secret knowledge or angelic intermediaries are needed - because Christ is not only supreme over all powers, but the very ground of all existence. And that leads directly into Paul’s next point: if Christ holds everything together, then His church, His body, is the place where His fullness lives on earth.

The Practical Power of Christ’s Supremacy

Christ’s role as the one who holds all things together means He is the beginning of everything and the ongoing force keeping every part of life in place.

This truth would have shocked the Colossian believers, who were being told they needed extra spiritual steps or intermediaries to reach God. Instead, Paul shows that Jesus is above all powers and actively sustaining them, leaving no room for any rival authority. It’s like saying every law of nature, every angelic being, every human government, and every thought in your mind exists and continues only because Christ holds it together moment by moment. This matches Hebrews 1:2-3, which says God ‘appointed [Christ] heir of all things, through whom also He made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word.’

So the good news is clear: we don’t need secret knowledge or spiritual middlemen - because in Christ, the fullness of God is present and active, holding all things together for those who trust in Him.

Christ in the Whole Story of Scripture

The supremacy of Christ over all creation is a doctrine found in Colossians and a consistent theme woven throughout the entire Bible, from the first page to the last.

John 1:1-3 makes it clear: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.' This shows that Jesus, as the eternal Word, was present at creation and was the active agent of it. Similarly, Hebrews 1:2-3 declares that God appointed His Son 'heir of all things, through whom also He made the universe,' and that He 'sustains all things by his powerful word,' echoing Colossians’ claim that Christ holds everything together by His power.

Even in the Old Testament, Proverbs 8:22-31 personifies divine wisdom as being beside God at creation, rejoicing in His world and His presence - a picture early Christians understood as pointing to Christ, the wisdom of God. When we see Jesus as the one through whom all things were made and are sustained, it aligns perfectly with Revelation 22:13, where He says, 'I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.' From Genesis to Revelation, Scripture presents Christ not as a secondary figure but as the central, divine force behind all existence - Creator, Sustainer, and ultimate purpose of all things.

Understanding this truth changes how we live: if Christ holds every atom, every moment, and every power in place, then our daily worries, relationships, and work are not left to chance or lesser spiritual forces. In church life, this means we don’t elevate traditions, personalities, or rules above Christ - we center everything on Him. And in our communities, living like Christ is truly supreme means showing His care in practical ways, trusting His power over every crisis, and pointing others to the one who holds all things together.
