Paul wrote this letter to Timothy, a young pastor in Ephesus, as a final encouragement to stand firm in truth and godliness amid cultural pressure and false teaching.

Running Hard in Both Directions

When he says 'call on the Lord from a pure heart,' he points to 2 Timothy 2:19, which says, 'The Lord knows those who are his, and, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.”' This shows that real faith is more than saying prayers; it requires turning away from sin because your heart truly belongs to God.

Fleeing sin and pursuing God aren’t two separate choices - they’re two sides of the same race.

Connecting to the Whole Story of Scripture

Paul’s command in 2 Timothy 2:22 fits perfectly within a much bigger pattern we see across the Bible.

Paul says 'Flee youthful passions,' and in 1 Corinthians 10:14 he adds, 'Flee from idolatry.' Both statements emphasize that avoiding anything that replaces God in our hearts is central to faithful living. Likewise, the call to 'pursue peace' echoes Hebrews 12:14, which says, 'Pursue peace with all people and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.'

And when Paul points to those who 'call on the Lord from a pure heart,' he’s tapping into a promise from Joel 2:32, quoted by Paul in Romans 10:13: 'Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

This call to flee sin and pursue godliness isn’t just Paul’s idea - it’s woven throughout God’s entire message from beginning to end.
